Relatively new to Bay Area audiences, Dozie (pronounced Doh-zee-ay), is an artist who has a voIce That places him in a category all his own. "My story starts in Manchester, England where I was born to a Nigerian father and a British mother," says Dozie. "My family moved to Nigeria when I was 4 and I spent most of my childhood there, moving to the US when I was a teenager. Like many people I started out singing in the church, but it wasn't until I was in college that I decided to learn how to play the piano. Within minutes of playing for the first time I knew what I wanted to do with my life. In fact, I was so determined that I would sneak into the basement of the local church at 3 a.m. every night to practice when nobody was around. After a couple of years I picked up the guitar and have been writing and producing ever since. I am living proof that it is NEVER too late to pursue your dreams. My music is my life. It is food for your soul - the way it was intended to be."Before long Dozie was on the path to making his first album. The result is a collection of infectious tracks and crafted musicianship that is entitled Redemption. Dozie wrote, produced, and arranged every song on the album. It is no surprise that the well-balanced mix of genres clearly represents his vision and his culture, but is strongly rooted in R&B, his first musical love. The album and his show at the Rrazz Room is a mix of soul, jazz, rock, reggae, and traditional African rhythms. "I'm a multicultural person heavily grounded in an African upbringing. It is only natural that my songs reflect that", Dozie says.
