Danny Glover to Emcee Benefit Evening for Ron Carter, 3/27

Danny-Glover-to-Emcee-Benefit-Evening-for-Ron-Carter-327-20010101

Juilliard Jazz presents a benefit evening on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 8 PM in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in celebration of Juilliard faculty member and legendary bassist Ron Carter. “Ron Carter at 75: A Life in Music” includes performances by Mr. Carter and an all-star line-up featuring guest artists Carl Allen, Benny Golson, Hubert Laws, Russell Malone, Christian McBride, Mulgrew Miller, Lewis Nash, Buster Williams, and others! Actor Danny Glover will emcee the evening.

The program opens with a bass salute to Mr. Carter by Buster Williams, Christian McBride, and others, followed by a nonet comprised of Juilliard classical and jazz musicians. Following the salute, Juilliard Jazz Ensembles perform a few of Mr. Carter’s compositions. An ensemble with guests Carl Allen, Benny Golson, Mulgrew Miller, Buster Williams, and others performs next, followed by the Golden Striker Trio with Mr. Carter, Russell Malone, and Mulgrew Miller.

The program wraps up with a guest tribute and the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra performing two tunes with guests Benny Golson, Russell Malone, Lewis Nash, Mulgrew Miller, and Hubert Laws. Mr. Carter closes the evening with a bass solo.

The evening benefits Juilliard Jazz and goes towards student scholarships. Benefit tickets, which include a private reception with the artists after the concert, are available through the Juilliard Patron’s Desk at (212) 769-7409.

About Ron Carter

Bassist and Juilliard faculty member, Ron Carter’s reputation in the music world is peerless. He stylishly accompanies any player or group, and without breaking stride, performs with stunning virtuosity as a soloist. His long list of accolades as a performer is unprecedented. Mr. Carter won a Grammy award in 1988 for the instrumental composition, Call Sheet Blues, from the film ‘Round Midnight. He scored and arranged music for a number of other films.

Mr. Carter is the author of Building Jazz Bass Lines, a series of books on playing jazz; a Comprehensive Bass Method, for classical bass studies; Ron Carter, Bass Lines; and The Music of Ron Carter, which contains 130 of his published and recorded compositions.

With more than 2,500 albums to his credit, Mr. Carter may well be the most recorded bassist around. He is equally successful as a leader and a supportive collaborator, anchoring extraordinary and varied sessions with commanding technique and impeccable taste. Mr. Carter has recorded with many of the greatest names in music. His 2011 CD is entitled Ron Carter’s Great Big Band (Sunnyside label).

As an educator, he has lectured, conducted, and performed at clinics and master classes, instructing jazz ensembles and teaching the business of music at numerous colleges. Mr. Carter was artistic director of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Studies while it was located in Boston, and after eighteen years on the faculty of the music department of the City College of New York, he is now distinguished professor emeritus.

Mr. Carter was honored by the French Minister of Culture with France’s premier cultural award – the medallion and title of Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters, given to those who have distinguished themselves in the domain of artistic or literary creation and for their contribution to the spread of arts and letters in France and the world.
