Confirmed: Julie Taymor Aiming for Broadway Return with Revival of M. BUTTERFLY

As reported by BroadwayWorld, Julie Taymor stated last week in a New York Post interview that she plans to have a project come to Broadway next spring or winter, but would not reveal further details. Last week, Michael Riedel wrote in the New York Post that Taymor is in talks to direct a revival of David Henry Hwang's Tony-winning play, M. BUTTERFLY.

Today, that news appears to be accurate with a casting notice going up for the production via Actors Equity which notes the Taymor-directed production is Broadway bound with rehearsals to begin in January of 2017, and performances in February of 2017 for an open-ended run.

No official announcement has yet been made.

Hwang's drama, which opened on Broadway in 1988, is based on the true story of French diplomat who falls in love with a member of the Peking Opera, unaware that the object of his passion was a man. John Lithgow starred and B.D. Wong won a supporting actor Tony for his breakout performance. Taymor is best known for directing the stage musical, The Lion King, for which she became the first woman to win the Tony Award for directing a musical, in addition to a Tony Award for Original Costume Design.

She has also received the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Costume Design, an Emmy Award, and an Academy Award nomination for Original Song. She also received the 2012 Director Award for Vision and Courage from the Athena Film Festival at Barnard College in New York City. She was the director of the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and an off-Broadway production of A Midsummer Night's Dream.
