Composer Alex Shapiro Leads CMA's First Tuesdays Seminar, 11/2

Chamber Music America (CMA) has invited composer Alex Shapiro to present her newest professional-development workshop for musicians, You Are the Art, You Are the Product: Making Your Music Available to the World. The seminar, the second in CMA's 2010-2011 First Tuesdays series, will be held on Tuesday, November 2, from 3:00-5:00 p.m., in Saint Peter's Church, 619 Lexington Avenue at 54th Street in New York City.

Alex Shapiro has found that international relationships created through the Internet, paired with local and national community involvement, have led to a fulfilling career in music. In You Are the Art, You Are the Product, she offers a broad discussion of the business, digital, and psychological tools that musicians need to create a viable, income-producing career. Topics will include promoting what you offer, rejecting the notion of competition, creating a compelling Web presence, copyright and publishing basics, and getting others to perform your music through distribution.

Published by her own company, Activist Music, Alex Shapiro's acoustic and electroacoustic works are performed and broadcast weekly across the U.S. and internationally and have been recorded on over 20 commercially released CDs. Well known in the new-music community through her articles in such web magazines as NewMusicBox and her blog, Alex serves on the board of directors of the American Music Center and The MacDowell Colony, is the elected concert-music representative on the ASCAP Board of Review, and is a past president of the board of directors of the American Composers Forum of Los Angeles.

Now in its eighth season, First Tuesdays is series of free monthly workshops that focus on a wide range of practical issues critical to the ensemble music professional. First Tuesdays workshops take place at Saint Peter's Church in New York City; recordings of selected sessions are offered free to CMA members via the CMA website. First Tuesdays is produced by Chamber Music America and the Jazz Ministry at Saint Peters Church and Midtown Arts Common.
