Golden Gate - A New Musical - 5/31/2008
MONMOUTH CIVIC CHORUS PERFORMS NEW MUSICAL
A new musical comes to New Jersey with the Monmouth Civic Chorus production of Golden Gate. Set in San Francisco in the 1930's, Golden Gate tells the story of a family traveling to the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge on a journey of discovery and reawakened hope.
The music of Golden Gate is a road trip from retro to pop, with sounds of the Jazz Age and 1990's Broadway. With music by Richard Pearson Thomas and book by Joe Calarco, the show won the Michael Stewart Musical Theater Development Award, named for the librettist of Hello, Dolly! and Bye Bye Birdie.
Composer and pianist Richard Pearson Thomas has had works performed by the Boston Pops, Covent Garden Festival, Houston Grand Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, Banff Centre, Skylight Opera Theatre, and Riverside Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir. His songs have been sung in Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Wigmore Hall, Joe's Pub, and before the U.S. Congress by artists such as Audra McDonald, Sanford Sylvan, Lauren Flanagan and Kurt Ollmann.
He is a recipient of an American Composers' Forum Continental Harmony commission for the Alabama Tri-State Orchestra. His work Race for the Sky, which was commissioned as a commemoration of the events of 9/11, has been performed by the Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra and in recitals nationwide. He is currently on faculty at Teachers College/Columbia University, and is composer-in-residence of the Gold Opera Project, Young Audiences/New York. In that capacity, he has composed more than 80 operas with students in New York City public schools.

House, Divided - 5/28/2008
For half a century the United States and Israel have been tied to each other - politically, strategically, economically, and through thousands of Jewish families with members living in both countries. Israel, situated in the middle of the Arab world, has been a major source of conflict and controversy among its Middle-Eastern neighbors, especially the Palestinian people. And Israel's eternally precarious position, and sometimes provocative military actions, have also divided American Jews; many anti-war liberals have become increasingly critical while more Zionistleaning conservatives have been unwavering in their support of the Jewish state. The Goldstein family of Philadelphia is torn apart when older brother Louis decides to embrace Jewish orthodoxy and move to Israel during the height of the Vietnam war. Betrayed and bewildered, Louis' younger brother Douglas builds a life around peace activism. Well over 20 years later, Louis is a retired officer of the Israeli army and Douglas is a Senior Director with Amnesty International. Divided by deep familial wounds and opposing religious and political beliefs, the two brothers are forced to re-engage one another when their sons, Oren and Paul, make surprising life decisions of their own. HOUSE, DIVIDED is a challenging and timely examination of family, faith and politics, and how the desire to distance ourselves from our past may only bring it closer to home in the future. Excerpts of the script of HOUSE, DIVIDED and an interview with playwright Larry Loebell are available online: www.interacttheatre.org .

Cubby Bernstein & 'Xanadu' Cast to Make Public Appearance - 5/27/2008
With award season in full swing, famed and notoriously private Tony Campaign Manager Cubby Bernstein will make a rare public appearance to deliver a much anticipated speech outside the Helen Hayes Theatre, 240West 44th Street on Wednesday, May 28th. From 4 pm to 6 pm, Cubby along with the cast of XANADU will be on site to sell cub-cakes to the public, as he instructed Julie White to do before her Tony Award win last year. The producers of XANADU, Robert Ahrens, Brian Swibel, Tara Smith, Cari Smulyan Dale Smith and Dan Vickery have chosen that all proceeds will go directly to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
As many people know, Cubby Bernstein is a legend in Tony campaign strategy and chooses one show a season to put his stamp on. This year, after a great deal of thought, Cubby has chosen XANADU as the show to guide through award time.
XANADU, Broadway's surprise musical hit, celebrates its first year on Broadway with 2008 Tony nominations for Best Book, Best Actress, Best Choreography and the coveted Best Musical Award. It has already received the 2008 Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical and the 2008 Drama Desk Award for Best Book.
