Tragedy: a tragedy – American Premiere Berkeley Rep - Thrust Stage Written by Will Eno Directed by Les Waters March 28 – April 27, 2008 (Press Night: Wednesday, April 2)

Finally, Berkeley Rep invites an intriguing and insightful playwright to the party in April: "Will Eno is a Samuel Beckett for the Jon Stewart generation," proclaims the New York Times, calling his off-Broadway hit Thom Pain (based on nothing), "an acidly funny meditation on the indelible sorrows of life." Now Berkeley Rep's intimate Thrust Stage houses the American premiere of Eno's satirical Tragedy: a tragedy. The sun – despite its shining record – has finally set. From the crackle of his hi-fi, the musical magically bursts to life on-stage telling the tale of a pampered Broadway starlet who wants to give up show business to get married, her producer who sets out to sabotage the nuptials, her chaperone, the debonair groom, the dizzy chorine, the Latin lover and a pair of gangsters who double as pastry chefs.

Canadian actor Jonathan Crombie, who is widely known for playing Gilbert Blythe in the popular Anne of Green Gables movies, plays the musical-loving Man in Chair. Georgia Engel ("The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "Everybody Loves Raymond") will reprise her role of Mrs. Tottendale for the tour. Elizabeth Rex - 4/4/2008

Nicu's Spoon proudly presents Elizabeth Rex, written by Timothy Findley and directed by Joanne Zipay, for a three-week limited engagement from April 2 – 19.

"On the eve prior to the dawn execution of Robert, Earl of Essex, for treason, Shakespeare and his company of actors are at court. Under curfew in a barn, with the Queen, through her restless night as she struggles with the decision she has made to behead her beloved 'Robin,'" explain press notes, "On the sixteenth century stage the women roles were played by men; the only woman in the company is the seamstress who makes and repairs the costumes. The Queen is intrigued by the nature of the men that play these roles, and whether their 'essence' is truly that of a man, or of a woman. In part to entertain and divert the Queen who is tormented by her decision to execute Essex, and in part to illuminate the question that so intrigues her, members of the company recite and play short vignettes from various of Shakespeare's plays. In this vein they challenge the Queen with provocative questions that would be inadmissible at any other time or place, and reveal their sympathy for Essex. At times the Queen commands and threatens regally, at times she drops her guard and confesses her womanly feelings."

The production stars Merle Louis (Drama Desk Award Recipient), Bill Galarno (The Godfather) and Oliver Conant (Summer of '42); plus Melanie Horton, Stephanie Barton-Farcas, Rebecca Challis, Michael Digoia, Andrew Hutcheson, Sammy Mena, Scott Nogi, Tim Romero, Alvero Sena and David Tully.

April 2 is a 'SWAN' night benefit (Support Women Artists Now) with a ticket price of $25. Running time is 2 hours with an intermission.

Tickets are $18 and are now available online at www.theatermania.com or by calling 866-811-4111. Tickets may also be purchased in-person at the Spoon Theatre Box Office, 1 hour prior to showtime. The Spoon Theatre is located at 38 West 38th St, 5th floor, between 5th and 6th.

Queen Hecuba, the slave-concubine Andromache, and Helen, the woman whose beauty started it all, meet in the ruins of Troy after their city has been sacked, their husbands killed, and their families taken away as slaves. Vividly recounting the final days of the Trojan civilization, The Trojan Women is an impassioned cry against violence that insists upon the victory of spirit amid the horrors created by gods and men," describe press notes.

Nine - 4/6/2008

Porchlight Music Theatre, Chicago, presents its season finale, the sexy and sophisticated Broadway musical, Nine. This Tony-Award Winning Best Musical is now in development with Rob Marshall to become a major motion picture. Chicago audiences can catch the musical live at Theatre Building Chicago from April 4 to May 18, 2007. The Press Opening is Sunday, April 6 at 2:30pm.

Nine is an unconventional love story based on Italian film director Federico Fellini's comedic masterpiece, "8 ½." The acclaimed production is the recipient of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical in 1982 and Best Revival of a Musical in 2003. The show is also the winner of ten Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Musical in 1982 and Outstanding Revival of a Musical in 2003. Nine's music and lyrics are by Maury Yeston, and the show's book is by Arthur Kopit.

Nine examines the midlife crisis of film director Guido Contini (who is based on the real life Federico Fellini). Guido's fortieth birthday sends him into an emotional tailspin that threatens to destroy his marriage and career. Guido brings his wife to Venice to save his marriage and restore his artistic passion, but while there he falls back into a tangled web of romance and deception. He is forced to examine his flawed relationships with the many women he has loved. Eventually, Guido learns to act like an adult, instead of a self-indulgent nine year old child.

Rob Marshall, the director and choreographer of the movie musical "Chicago," is in pre-production for a film based on Nine the Musical. The film is set to star Javier Bardem, Sophia Loren and Penelope Cruz. It is slated to be released in 2009.

Porchlight's cast includes, Jeff Parker as Guido Contini. The women in his life include his wife Luisa (Heather Townsend), his mistress Carla (Maggie Portman) and his muse, Claudia (Marie Svejda-Groh). The ensemble includes: Christin P. Boulette, Danielle Brothers, Brigitte Ditmars, Kristen Freilich, Vanessa Greenway, Jennifer T. Grubb, Bethany Thomas, Abigail Trabue. Young Guido at nine years old will be played by Matthew Gold.

Nine reunites much of the original team from Porchlight's award-winning musical Ragtime. Nine is directed by artistic director, L. Walter Stearns, with music direction by Eugene Dizon and choreography by Brenda Didier. The sexy costumes are by Bill Morey and the scenic universe is designed by Kevin Depinet. Julian Pike is the lighting designer, Kevin Carney is the sound designer and Christopher Tisone is the stage manager.
