NYC Ninth Anniversary of the Hip Hop Theater Festival, Festival to Run - 10/17/2009
The Hip-Hop Theater Festival (HHTF) is back stretching from Brooklyn to Manhattan and bringing three culturally-packed weeks of art, dance, and theater. From October 1st-17th the HHTF will celebrate the foundational roots and evolution of Hip-Hop, along with the movement's groundbreaking journey through the arts in a series of shows. Broken into three overarching themes, the festival features the classical elements of hip-hop (music; break dancing; graffiti), family-friendliness (a children?s show; a show for youth, by youth; spoken word performances) and finally women leading the way forward (reading series; women-centric performances). Included in these various performances are fully produced theater works, staged readings, educational panels, dance showcases and workshops - all in celebration of the Hip-Hop movement.

Fela!, the critically acclaimed musical that had audiences on their feet during its world premiere last summer at Off-Broadway's 37 Arts, will arrive on Broadway this fall where it begins performances at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre (230 West 49th Street) on Monday, October 19. The official opening is set for Monday, November 23. This new musical, based on the life of groundbreaking African composer, performer and activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti, is directed and choreographed by Tony® Award-winner Bill T. Jones (Spring Awakening), with a book by Jim Lewis and Bill T. Jones. Sahr Ngaujah will return in the title role for which he received universal acclaim, while the world renowned Antibalas and other members of the NYC Afrobeat community, under the direction of AaRon Johnson, will again perform Kuti?s rousing music live onstage. Winner of this year?s Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical, Fela! was conceived by Bill T. Jones, Jim Lewis and Steve Hendel.

Theaters Against War (THAW) is launching a new initiative to expose the current effects of the "war on terror" in eroding human rights and civil liberties here in the US. In a call out to artists, activists and the general public, the organization will be hosting the initiative, 'No Guantanamos at Home or Abroad,' a series of vigils beginning Monday, October 19 from 6 - 7pm and every Monday thereafter at the Metropolitan Correctional Center at 150 Park Row (at Pearl Street) in lower Manhattan, a federal penitentiary that has been mirroring many of the abusive practices detainees face at Guantanamo upon actual American citizens according to THAW.

At a press conference in Tokyo today, New York Philharmonic Music Director Designate Alan Gilbert and President and Executive Director Zarin Mehta announced the details of Asian Horizons: Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic, October 8?24, 2009. This will be the Orchestra?s inaugural international concert tour under the leadership of Alan Gilbert, who will begin his tenure as Music Director in September 2009. Asian Horizons will consist of eleven concerts, spanning five Asian countries, with performances in Tokyo, Japan (a destination of special significance in light of Mr. Gilbert?s Japanese heritage); Seoul, Korea; Singapore; and the Philharmonic?s debut performances in Hanoi, Vietnam, and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Pianist Emanuel Ax and violinists Frank Peter Zimmermann and Ye-Eun Choi (Philharmonic debut) are the featured soloists on the tour. Asian Horizons marks the fourth New York Philharmonic concert tour under the aegis of Credit Suisse, the Orchestra?s Global Sponsor, and the second in Asia.
