Charlotte Street Presents the 2011 Generative Performing Awards Event, 10/22

Charlotte Street Foundation today announced the 2011 Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Awards Fellows Event, Saturday, October 22, 8pm at the Union Station City Stage, 30 West Pershing Road, Kansas City Missouri. This event honors the work of playwright/director Kyle Hatley and composer James Mobberley, who received Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Awards of $7500 each earlier this year. Hatley and Mobberley were selected for the Awards by a panel of regional and national performing arts professionals through a highly competitive, two-phase process. The Charlotte Street Generative Performing Artist Awards recognize Kansas City based artists creating outstanding, innovative, original work in the fields of dance, theater, music, experimental music performance, theater/performance art, and hybrid versions thereof.

THE EVENT WILL FEATURE LIVE PERFORMANCES OF WORK BY BOTH OF THE FELLOWS:

Kyle Hatley will present selected scenes from his brand new, in-development musical, People Fall, in the form of a workshop reading. His intention is to present the material in the same manner new plays are presented before investors in New York, providing a compelling vision of how it might live in a fully realized and designed production. The cast of eight includes Natalie Liccardello, Carrie Lenahan, and Katie Kalahurka, as well as Eryn Preston as Music Director, co-music writer, and pianist.

People Fall is "about the fear of death, the psychology of bloodlines and the inescapable hell of consciousness." It tells the story of 40 year old, Amelia Windgate, who has never been in love, never been kissed, and keeps better company with flowers than people. Her strange and sincere innocence unsettles the extroverted madness of her Southern family whose dark history is haunted by the loss of their men through tragic accidents. The events of the wedding of her youngest sister rouse the fear of death within the joy of life, the anxiety of growing up and the mysterious family curse. Amelia's consciousness narrates this dark cautionary tale of a musical shedding light on how she sees the world and everything within it.

James Mobberley presents two pieces that represent a much larger collection of collaborative works he's participated in, spanning over nearly 30 years in Kansas City. Each piece features the live solo instrument performance of one of his colleagues at University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance paired with the playback of sounds that originally came largely from that same instrument, which Mobberly has recorded, manipulated and mixed together. The effect is an invisible, orchestral accompaniment to each performer's solo material.

The works include Alter Ego (2006) for cello and fixed media, featuring Cartern Enyeart on cello, which is an homage to Mobberley's mentor Roger Hannay; and Icarus Wept (1994-97), a five-movement work for trumpet and fixed media, featuring Keith Benjamin on trumpet. This piece was originally commissioned by Keith Benjamin for his trumpet and organ duo Clarion, with organist Melody Turnquist-Steed, and was loosely inspired by the legendary flight of Icarus toward the sun and the sudden realization of the fatal mistake.
