Celebrate Eliza Doolittle Day at Everyman Theatre

By:

Pygmalion, George Bernard Shaw's classic comedy about dapper Henry Higgins and his attempts to make a lady out of Eliza Doolittle, is currently in rehearsal at Everyman Theatre and is set to open on Friday, May 20th.

It seems only fitting that May 20th should be Opening Night for this production. In the musical, My Fair Lady, which is based on Pygmalion, Eliza proudly proclaims (in song) that "next week on the twentieth of May, I proclaim 'Liza Doolittle Day!"

Over 50% of performances are already sold out!

Don't miss your chance to see Kyle Prue, one of Everyman's original Company Members, return to the stage in the iconic role of Henry Higgins.

The Original Makeover Story From Which a Thousand Imitators Were Born....

George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion was inspired by the Greek myth of Pygmalion, who was the creator of a beautiful sculpture which came to life. This myth was the basis for many Victorian stories. Shaw's version of the tale, featuring Eliza Doolittle as the "sculpture" and Henry Higgins as her "creator" became one of the most popular. Other modern day interpretations include:

Pretty Woman
The 1990 romantic comedy starred Richard Gere as Edward Lewis ("Henry Higgins") and Julia Roberts as Vivian Ward ("Eliza Doolittle") in this modern day telling of the makeover story. The film led to Julia Roberts' first Academy Award nomination.

Mighty Aphrodite
Woody Allen took on the Pygmalion myth with this 1995 film, which featured a Greek chorus that narrated and commented on the action in the modern day fable. Mira Sorvino won multiple awards for her work as Linda Ash, the Eliza Doolittle of this tale.

She's All That
This late 1990s teen romantic comedy translated the Pygmalion story into a high school setting. The most popular senior, played by FrEddie Prinze Jr., makes a bet that he can turn any girl at the school into the Prom Queen.
