CalArts Animation Present Frame by Frame Showcase 9/25

By:

"Frame by Frame" an animation showcase presenting seven short films from the CalArts' 2010 class of experimental animators, character animators and graphic designers. Following the screening the artists and audience will discuss the unique contribution of each field to animation and storytelling. "Frame by Frame" takes place one night only on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at the Tateuchi Democracy Forum, part of the Japanese National American Museum, at 369 East First Street, Los Angeles, California 90012. Admission is free and by reservation only. For reservations, please email framebyframeshowcase@gmail.com or go to www.framebyframeshowcase.com

"Frame by Frame" features: A Lost Generation by Daryn Wakasa, The Real McCoy by Eliza Ivanova, When the Time is Ripe by Shion Takeuchi, Going Home by Dae In Chung, On My Way by Misty Mardsen, Somewhere Under the Rainbow by Ariel Hart and Summer, Autumn, Winter Spring by Stephen Lee. These experimental animators, character animators and graphic designers, from a variety of cultural backgrounds, all tell their stories with narrative, imagery, motion and sound. And while their tools are similar, the way each director uses the tools is unique to their individual background, interests and fields of study; "Frame by Frame" provides a forum to examine these works and their methods of storytelling.

Daryn Wakasa is the lead artist behind "Frame by Frame" collaborating with Devin Daily as Co-Creative Director and Jackie Banks-Mahlum as Co-Producer. Daryn comes from the motion design industry and has used his three years at CalArts to explore how graphic design and film can link in order to create a new cinematic form that emotionally engages an audience with socially progressive content. As a fourth generation Japanese American, his work focuses on the post-generational effects of the Japanese internment camps as well as other Japanese American cultural issues. His film A Lost Generation, featured in the showcase, was recently accepted into the Peachtree Village International Film Festival in Atlanta, Georgia and to the Downtown Film Festival Los Angeles.

CalArts is unique in its multidisciplinary approach to studying the arts through its six related schools: Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music and Theatre. CalArts encourages students to recognize and explore the complexity of the aesthetic, social and political aspects of the arts. It is supported by its distinguished faculty of practicing artists and provides its BFA and MFA students with both the hands-on training and the engagement with the cultural community necessary for artists' growth. CalArts was founded in 1961-and opened in 1969-as the first institution of higher learning in the U.S. specifically for students interested in pursuing degrees in all areas of the visual and performing arts.
