For the first time ever, graduating seniors in The City College of New York's Department of Theatre and Speech will present a showcase evening of scenes, songs and monologues to the New York entertainment industry. The City College Showcase will be presented 7 p.m. Monday, May 6, at the Producers' Club, 358 W. 44th Street, in the Crown Theater.

Following the model of many other drama schools, student showcases act as an introduction to the show business community. They can even provide a springboard for the start of a student's career. The practice has become more and more popular in the last 25 years, filling up springtime evenings with these events for the industry. So why is City College joining this already-crowded schedule?

"We have something very different to offer," said Michael Bartoli, the instructor who has been organizing the effort. "The experience at City College is unique, not only because of our Manhattan location and close proximity to the industry, but because of the extraordinary diversity and talent of our students. The life and cultural experiences our undergraduates bring to the table is unlike any other school."

The collection of material to be performed was chosen with this diversity in mind. In addition, agents, managers and casting directors will see examples of the strong technique and training the students receive at City College in pursuit of their BA Theatre degree.

The senior showcase is presented as part of an eponymous one-credit course that incorporates lessons on industry practices and how to successfully navigate a show business career in addition to choosing and rehearsing material for the showcase.
