Broward Cultural Division to Host 'Embracing the Future' Seminar for Local Cultural Execs

By:

Broward Cultural Division, the South Florida Theatre League, and the Theatre Communications Group (TCG), invite the area's cultural executives, Theatre League members, theater managers and board members to the seminar, Embracing the Future: Strategic Planning and Succession Planning, on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the Einstein Room, Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312.

This day-long workshop will explore critical areas that arts leaders and board members should consider in order to ensure a healthy future for their organizations. The curriculum will be organized in three sections: The morning session (9 am to noon) will guide participants through the fundamentals of strategic planning, utilizing questions and feedback supplied by participants ahead of time. The session will focus upon the value of clear-eyed thinking about a company's current position, strengths, and weaknesses; how to develop a vision for a successful future; and how to inspire and engage all stakeholders.

A lunchtime roundtable (noon to 1:30 p.m.) will address the importance of cultural diversity in sustaining organizations for the 21st century and beyond. In what ways is Florida a model for the rest of the country, and alternatively, what are the obstacles to a fully diverse and inclusive landscape for the arts? How do practitioners of color successfully pursue arts leadership? The afternoon session (1:30 pm to 4:30 pm) will bring all conversations together in a discussion of succession planning for all organizations, including those currently led by founders.

These sessions will be interactive, and will deal with issues specific to the participants. The day will conclude with a brief overview of challenges and opportunities in the American theater field overall, and how theaters in South Florida fit into our national landscape. This program is presented by Theatre Communications Group, the national organization for theater in the U.S.

Presenters:

- Teresa Eyring, Executive Director, Theatre Communications Group, brings 20 years as an executive in theaters around the U.S. "TCG offers a variety of professional development and training programs to theatre practitioners and trustees of our more than 500 member theatres nationwide," said Eyring.
- Greg Kandel, founder and a partner of Management Consultants for the Arts, Inc of Stamford, Connecticut - a firm that assists cultural organizations in planning, executive search, and organizational analysis.
- Mica Cole, arts administrator, former executive director of Free Street Theatre and planning consultant, has been supporting and creating theater in Chicago for the past ten years.

The fee for the all-day workshop and lunch is $25; Single sessions (morning, afternoon, or lunch) round table, $10.
