Brooklyn's Knitting Factory Hosts THE DONKEYS and VIRGIN FOREST, 5/23

Brooklyns-Knitting-Factory-Presents-THE-DONKEYS-and-VIRGIN-FOREST-523-20010101

The Knitting Factory welcomes the Donkeys and Virgin Forest on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, doors at 7:30 pm, show at 8:30 pm, located at 361 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 day of show.

For tickets and information, call 347-529-6696 or visit http://bk.knittingfactory.com/event/111915/.

Coming from California, the Donkeys are simply four beach bums who love to surf, drink cheap beer and jam as the sun sets over the Pacific. Best friends from Southern California, Timothy DeNardo, Jessie Gulati, Anthony Lukens and Sam Sprague are the real thing; sharing their escape fantasies, and top-down cars and suntanned utopian surf tableaus, both of which are depicted in their music.

Part of the magic comes from the fact that there’s no artifice to the Donkeys’ songs, from the matter-of-fact breakup blues of “Boot on the Seat” to the playful recollections of a late, drunken night narrated on “Nice Train.” These are everyday lives in the postmodern world expressed with a deep respect for classic songs from the 70s through the 90s—for spacey grooves and soulful, jangly swagger—that elevates the subject matter beyond the ordinary. Their second album, Living on the Other Side, mixes techniques of classics such as the Byrds, Ray Davies and Buffalo Springfield.

The Donkeys hit the road on May 12, 2012 for three weeks of music, starting off in San Diego all the way to the east coast. For more information about the band, click here.

Joining the Donkeys is ex members of the Castanets, Virgin Forest. Virgin Forest has a unique take on traditional “American” music, Virgin Forest's debut LP, "Joy Atrophy," like Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors," is the sound of love being pulled apart from the inside. The LP stands as necessary culmination of protracted and self-destructive love, laid bare in aching but poker-faced vocal harmonies.
