Brooklyn Museum Target First Saturdays Celebrates The Latino List Exhibit

The Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturday attracts thousands of visitors to free programs of art and entertainment each month. The October event features a variety of programs inspired by the exhibition Timothy Greenfield-Sanders: The Latino List that explores what it means to be Latino in America. Highlights Include:

5:30-6:30 p.m. Dance: The ABAKUÁ Afro-Latin Dance Company blends elements of mambo, funk, and Afro-Caribbean dance. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 4:30 p.m.

6-8 p.m. Music: Jerry Hernandez y La Orquesta Dee Jay host a salsa party. A salsa lesson by dancers Farrah Benoit and Franklin Liranzo precedes the program at 5 p.m.

6:30 p.m. Performance: The colorful comedic actress, playwright, and performance artist Carmelita Tropicana presents excerpts from original works.

6:30-8:30 p.m. Hands-On Art: How has your personal history influenced you? Create a collage that reflects on your past and present and imagines your future. Free timed tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5:30 p.m.

7-8:30 p.m. Film and Artist Talk: The Latino List (Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, 2011, 60 min.). The companion HBO documentary to the Museum's exhibition. Following the screening, the artist-director discusses his work. Free tickets available at the Visitor Center at 6 p.m.

8-10 p.m. Dance Party: DJ Bobbito spins Latin, Afrobeat, progressive hip-hop, and more.

9 p.m. Book Club: Actor-poet Lemon Andersen discusses his memoir County of Kings, which traces his rise to fame from a poverty-stricken childhood in a Brooklyn housing complex.

9-10 p.m. Music: Brooklyn-based musician Jose Conde fuses Cuban and Latin American sounds with rock and soul.

10-11 p.m. Late Night in the Galleries: All galleries open.

Throughout the evening, a cash bar will offer beer and wine, and the Museum Café will serve a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, and beverages. The Museum Shop will remain open until 11 p.m.

Some Target First Saturday programs have limited space available and are ticketed on a first-come, first-served basis. Programs are subject to change without notice. Museum admission is free after 5 p.m. Museum galleries are open until 11 p.m. Parking is a flat rate of $4 from 5 to 11 p.m.

HOB Connection Free Shuttle
Saturday, October 1, 5-10 p.m.
The Heart of Brooklyn (HOB), a partnership of the leading cultural institutions located near Grand Army Plaza in central Brooklyn, operates a free shuttle between Target First Saturdays and places to eat, drink, and shop, to support local merchants in surrounding neighborhoods. At each stop, tour guides can suggest local restaurants, shops and bars and provide maps and discounts.
