Broadway 'Breaks a Billion' in 2009 Box Office Report

The year end figures for the Broadway box office have been compiled by the Broadway League, making 2009 a milestone year for the stage, with gross figures breaking the billion mark, as per a report in Variety. 'Wicked' garnered the top spot for individual sales, grossing approximately $77.3 million. 'Billy Elliot' claimed the No. 2 spot with $66.2 million in ticket sales.

While attendance was visibly lower in 2009 with 11.95 million compared with the previous year's turnout of 12.32 million, tourism contributed to high numbers being raked in for such favorites as 'The Lion King' ($63.2 million), 'Jersey Boys' (56.5 million) and 'Mamma Mia!' (47.1 million).

Star power was a significant factor in driving the numbers up, with theatre-goers flocking to see big industry names on stage. The production of 'God of Carnage', starring the original cast consisting of James Gandolfini and Jeff Daniels, recorded an impressive $29.9 million. 'A Steady Rain' which starred Broadway vet Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig, logged in $15.2 million. 'Blithe Spirit' with Angela Lansbury earned $11.6 million while Jude Law's 'Hamlet' drew in $10 million.
