Birmingham Hippodrome's Stage Appeal Closes With £1m Successfully Raised

By:

Birmingham Hippodrome has announced the successful completion of its Stage Appeal having raised the target of £1m towards extensive refurbishments costing over £2m.

The 30-year old stage was completely replaced, over 500 light-fittings were upgraded to LED, the orchestra pit was refurbished, and the entrance foyer was remodelled with a new box office, cloakroom, digital signage and new heat-efficient front doors.

Grant-making Trusts and Foundations contributed over two-thirds of the funds raised with significant generous donations from the Monument Trust (part of the Sainsbury Family Trusts), the Wolfson Foundation, The Garfield Weston Foundation, The Foyle Foundation and The JP Getty Jr Charitable Trust. Twenty-one further local trusts were also supportive.

Funds were also raised from the corporate sector, including donations at events and dinners, totalling just over £165,000. Donations from members of the audience and local community organisations now exceed £173,000 but there is still time for anyone wishing to make a contribution to the total project costs before the end of January 2013 on 0844 338 5000.

John Crabtree, Chairman of Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre Trust, said: “We are delighted to have reached our £1m target towards the considerable costs of the refurbishment we had to complete this autumn. The extensive backstage and foyer improvements will benefit everyone as they make the theatre more efficient, ensuring we can continue to be a stage for the best in the world.”

PwC Midlands Regional Chairman Mark Smith, who is also Chair of the Hippodrome’s Development Trust, added: “We are hugely grateful to all the donors who helped us with this essential project. Thousands of Hippodrome patrons have donated generously, and the region’s business community has demonstrated consistent support. We offer particular thanks for the substantial investment from grant-making Trusts recognising the theatre’s charitable aims and future ambitions.”
