Barrow Street Hosts 12-Day Performance Showcase with 'Fortnight'
By: BWW News Desk
Barrow Street Fortnight at the Barrow Street Theatre, from January 9 to January 20, is a category-defying celebration of performance, spoken word, improvisation, stand-up and music. Featuring nine separate shows in 12 days, the Barrow Street Theatre, 27 Barrow Street, welcomes a border-crossing roster of distinguished groups and guest artists.
Among the entertainers programmed for Fortnight are Austin's popular musical iconoclasts The Asylum Street Spankers premiering "What? And Give Up Show Biz?" a new show described as a "laugh-out loud sing-a-long theater experience;" the always-evolving, deeply personal "Two Men Talking," the so-called performance of a friendship created (and improvised nightly) by two doctors who grew up in South Africa and now live in New York; local favorite Brian Dykstra performing his incendiary "The Jesus Factor;" Ohio native Lisa Biales presenting her interactive musical for families "Yellow Shoes" (performed on two special morning matinees); socially-minded, late-night sketch comedy from FreeLoveForum and Drop Six, and the Trinidadian performance artist/activist Roger Bonair-Agard who shares stories, poetry and calypso in a home-cooked recollection of Trinidad in the 80's called "Masquerade: Calypso and Home." Also appearing are Caitlin Miller in "Way to Go!" Music from Yesterday, who fill the stage with inventive new compositions and instruments ranging from drums to electric guitar to toy piano (featured is the percussion duo LOOP 243), and Damian Baldet in "Pugilist," his wild meditation on courage, vengeance, and parking spaces. Tickets for individual shows range from $15 to $25. Tickets for the shows listed above can be purchased thru Telecharge, at 212/239-6200, or www.telecharge.com. Tickets for all Fortnight events can be purchased at the Barrow Street Theatre, 27 Barrow Street at 7th Avenue South.
