Central Florida's Bach Festival Choir has been invited by the Daytona Beach International Festival to partner once again with the London Symphony Orchestra, this time to perform Carl Orff's epic Carmina Burana. The LSO Classical V performance, also featuring Stravinsky's Firebird Suite, will take place at the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach on Saturday, May 2 at 8 p.m.
The Bach Festival Choir and London Symphony first paired in July 2007 to perform Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 to critical acclaim. The Orlando Sentinel said of that performance: "Friday's first-rate performance showed the Winter Park choir was every bit the equal of the world-class London Symphony Orchestra." This year's collaboration for Orff's Carmina Burana is sure to bring even greater praise. Carmina Burana is one of the few 20th-century classical works that has invaded popular culture. This powerful music of Orff can be heard today in movies and television commercials, as well as in live performances.
The Bach Festival Choir prepares and performs five major choral works each year during its regular performance season, cumulatively donating over 26,000 hours of time per year. The dedication of the choir is immense, but as choir member Cezarina Vintilla explains it, "My favorite part about participating in the Bach Choir is that it enables me to unleash my passion and love for music." The level of skill required to prepare and present an additional work is enormous, but the talents and commitment of the Bach Festival Choir are perfectly suited to meet the challenge. Bach Festival Society Artistic Director and Conductor John V. Sinclair will prepare the choir for this performance with the London Symphony Orchestra and says, "It is truly a pleasure to sing such great repertoire with one of the world's greatest orchestras. I am proud to be a part of this fantastic partnership."
The Bach Festival Choir and London Symphony Orchestra will be under the baton of conductor Daniel Harding for this performance. A rising star in the field of young conductors today, Daniel Harding, only in his 30s, is already the Principal Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Principal Conductor of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra.
Located in Daytona Beach, the Florida International Festival is the greatest achievement of the Central Florida Cultural Endeavors, presenting the biannual Festival to East Central Florida for over three decades. The highlight of each Festival season is the 10-day residency of the London Symphony Orchestra.
