BWW TORONTO: A 'TOXIC' Opening Night at the Music Hall
Dancap's Production of The Toxic Avenger officially opened on October 31st, and it was quite a crowd to usher the show into it's new home at the Music Hall on Danforth Ave.
Crowds (largely in costume) were lined up around the block getting ready to take their seats for what promised to be a fun and entertaining night, and it did not disappoint!
The musical is based on B-movie guru Lloyd Kaufman's popular Toxic Avenger film franchise. Kaufman worked very hard on this piece as fans of the Troma series of movies are very loyal to the franchise, and are unlikely to be disappointed in the finished product. The story centers around geek Melvin Ferd the Third who is dumped into a vat of radioactive waste by evil-doers, and in the process becomes New Jersey's first superhero.
For the musical adaption, director John Rando has done a wonderful job creating the set and staging for the Toronto production. The script by Joe DiPietro is funny and witty, and the audience laughs out loud on more than one occasion. The rock score is provided by David Bryan of Bon Jovi fame, and the four piece on-stage rock band really blows the roof off the Music Hall.
All in all, I observed a fantastic show with an extremely talented cast of only five, all putting tons of effort and heart into something that is a bit unconventional for musical theatre. For those who enjoyed Evil Dead: The Musical, be sure to check out The Toxic Avenger...for everyone else, give it a try anyways, you might find yourself pleasantly surprised!
