Beale, Shaw, and Blanchett Set for National Theatre's 2010 Season 2009/11/13
Posted: 11/16/2009
Dear Broadway World, I'm afraid this story is incorrect: Cate Blanchett is not appearing in The White Guard. The play is in a new version by Andrew Upton, who runs the Sydney Theatre Company with his wife Cate Blanchett - that's the only connection! Further details about the production and the cast can be found at:

What was up with this so-called "infection" wacko pat had in her side, bleeding? Was that a real thing or was she just faking to get sympathy? The movie didn't really explain it. I haven't read Ann Rule's book yet. I hope it is explained in the book!

1st- since 1972, and it has not lost it's teeth in all of those years. Unless I missed the end of the sexual revolution, and the resolution of unsolved gender/ identity issues. 2nd- I saw the show twice and waited at the sold out last weekend try and get back in, maybe you got lost and went into the wrong place, I am about the hardest person to please, especially when it comes to "Rocky", that production was beautiful. You had better believe that I will be at that fundraiser!

Actually, I was hoping the reviewer of the show might find it worthwhile to mention the creative team behind the production. Apparently, giving the whole story away was more important than, say, actually REVIEWING the show.

Amateur at its best - the reworking of this magnificant musical was completely overdone and overshadows any great moment that this musical could create.

This is a truly stirring and stunning production of a brilliant, intelligent, heartfelt musical. To say it isn't Sondheimesque in its complexity should be a compliment. Why should everyone have to be Sondheim? When people do imitate Sondheim, they get slammed for it (rightfully). Ahrens and Flaherty and Mc Nally took an almost impossible assignment -- the multi-leveled and multi-plotted book by E. L.Doctorow -- and created a cohesive, touching and thought-provoking work. Ben Brantley wasted the first page of his review blathering on about the original production. it sounds like he wrote his review before seeing the production (as usual). Marcia Milgrom Dodge's direction is respectful, lucid and imaginative. I loved it.

I saw the original and found it stirring, but I feel I enjoyed this revival even more. I feel it is more comfortable in its current theatre, and the story even more topical. I saw it Saturday night and it received a well-deserved standing ovation! It is one of the best productions I have seen in a long, long time! Bravo!

REVIEW: 'Fall of the House of Usher' at Nashville Opera 2009/11/15
Posted: 11/16/2009
What? This was the worst operatic production I have ever seen in my life! It was a poor interpretation of the Poe original, and there was so little singing that you can hardly call it an opera. Frankly, it was painful to sit through, which is a particularly harsh criticism as I am a great fan of opera.
