'Here They Go Again!' ROCK OF AGES Will Hit Toronto May 2010 Posted: 10/19/2009 Being on American Idol/Canadian Idol does not automatically qualify someone to play the lead in a musical. Constantine Maroulis had the training and experience for the lead role. Yes, the ROA people knew of him because of American Idol, but he was cast as he was perfect for the role and possessed all the necessary qualifications. He has certainly proved that. Thank you very much. Broadway Producers Putting Together Fall Reading of CARRIE: THE MUSICAL Posted: 10/19/2009 I, for one, am so excited! I've only known about the show for roughly two years, but the whole time I've known I've said to myself, "They could totally make this work! Why haven't they tried again?" I really hope something good comes from this reading, and that, if anything, the show gets a proper recording! Maria Gavrilova To Sing Title Role In Met's TOSCA Tonight 10/14, Karita Mattila To Return 10/17 Posted: 10/19/2009 I attended the performance in which Maria Gavrilova sang Tosca. She has a glorious, rich, auditorium-filling voice. She is also a good actress. I was thrilled by her performance -- despite the limitations of the mostly misguided new production. The new production, which was booed on opening night was indeed inferior to the Zeffirelli production. The biggest disappointment came in the first act. It replaced a thrilling, sumptuous recreation of a cathedral. The new production, by Luc Bondy, had some nice touches, such as Angelotti entering the cathedral on a rope. But so much of Act 1 was dark, and did not live up to the glorious music written by Puccini. I think Puccini would have felt cheated by this production. Acts 2 & 3 fared much better. In spite of the criticism, I was impressed with the creative touches, and the drama of the music did not suffer. In spite of the disappointing new production, I enjoyed the opera. The soloists sang brilliantly, as did the chorus. The orchestra was good, too. I look forward to hearing more of Maria Gavrilova's singing.
