BWW Reviews: THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, Kings Theatre Glasgow, February 25 2013
The 2013 national tour celebrating 40 years of Rocky proves that this musical is showing no signs of old age.
The audience at the Kings Theatre was the perfect mix of long time Rocky Horror fans in full costume, and people who seemed completely baffled as to what was going on - even more so when the trademark heckling came in.
This production is brighter than previous ones, fun and fresh although remains loyal to the 1973 original. The show has an element of panto (although the toast throwing has been banned due to health and safety regulations) but it relies on a previous knowledge of the show for it to really work. Thankfully there were enough die-hard fans in the audience for it to really take off.
The songs are brilliant and the acting is superb. Oliver Thornton is an irresistable Frank N Furter and Ben Forster and Roxanne Pallet make a very convincing Brad and Janet. Playing the part of Rocky was a well muscled RhydIan Roberts who sounded on top form.
The whole evening seems to go past in a flash. The show can't be accused of dragging, or even having any 'filler' songs. From the opening Science Fiction, Double Feature to the Timewarp encore, the audience remain utterly enthralled.
Credit must also go to Philip Franks for his role as narrator. A lot of the audience shout-outs are almost scripted, but the occasionAl Random comment was deflected without skipping a beat.
The Rocky Horror Show is on tour around the UK.
