Tonight's the night! NATASHA, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812, starring Josh Groban as 'Pierre' and Denée Benton as 'Natasha' in their Broadway debuts, opens tonight at the Imperial Theatre. A theatrical experience like no other, the new musical is Dave Malloy's inspired adaptation of a 70-page slice of War and Peace that puts audiences just inches away from Tolstoy's brash young lovers, as they light up Moscow in an epic tale of romance and passion.
With just hours left before opening night commences, BroadwayWorld is taking you behind the scenes at the Imperial with 'Bolkonsky/Andrey,' played by the wonderful Nicholas Belton. Check out just a another day in the life of Nick below!
As an actor with ADD, getting into the gym first thing in the morning is the best way to get my wheels turning.
I believe food is medicine and a green smoothie (along with a couple supplements) in the morning makes me a happy camper. If my fiancé decides to bring it to me in bed, that's the icing on the cake, but I don't count on it ;)
I'm forever antsy and a bike ride to work through Central Park relieves any amount of stress and gets my muscles and tendons ready for the 2 1/2 hour Comet marathon.
Good coffee is my happy place. If you enjoy coffee, try Counter Culture out of North Carolina. There's no brick and mortar but there are a lot of breakfast spots in the city that sell it. The smell is even more addicting than the taste. Sometimes I'll brew it just for the smoky and wonderful aroma that it gives off in our newly renovated dressing room.
Josh (aka J-Grobes) and I came up with an agreement: As long as I don't out-sing him in 'Pierre and Andrey' he will give me a full Swedish massage before every performance ;) He is my best friend in the show after all - If you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours!
I have to make sure the sound guy, Cooper, is doing his job. If I am off key or flat it's definitely his fault. Nothing to do with me, n-o-p-e... not at all.
Getting blown up everyday is no easy task. Luckily, Sarah our makeup artist gets me in Rambo mode with a few swipes of her brush and a swift kick to get me ready for Napoleon.
At the beginning of Act 2 we pass out love letters to the audience. #WeWriteLetters. It has become a contest amongst myself to outdo my handwritten love letter from the show before. Finding my daily love letter that a Twitter follower received is the highlight of my evening!
Like every lil kid who dreams of being on Broadway, it's still pretty cool to come out the stage door and hear people call your name. Comet fans are like no other - and I'm eternally grateful for all the sweet souls that meet us on the street to say hello. A quick squeeze warms my heart like you couldn't imagine.
If you've checked out my blog www.SundayTheory.com, you'll know healthy eating is extremely important to me. Getting a meal that not only fills me up but also nourishes me from the inside out is really my top in-between show goal. Dig Inn and The Little Beet are my favorite healthy theatre district spots.
My gluteus maximus gets quite the work out during the show and another beating from Alaina and the gang at Neurosport but it's worth the pain for my booty muscle gain.
For some reason after a delicious fish dinner, Denee doesn't like giving me a big opening number smooch. So since she's my onstage love, it's only her spousal duty to help make my pearly whites minty fresh.
"Pre 2nd Show Dance Party: 7:45PM" - Our milkshake brings all the cast to our dressing room. By the time our second show rolls around with our bellies full of dinner, it's easy to get into a slump. But thanks to our pre 2nd show dance parties, it's only booty shakes, body rolls and high energy from here on out.
Sometimes I accidentally wear my show socks home and my dear dresser, Sam, says "one more time Belton and I'll..." But he always forgives me.
I'm so lucky that my dressing roommates are the coolest cats on the Great White Way. Hashtag SquadGoals. After a quick old fashioned with my boys, I head home to hop in an Epsom salt bath and snuggle with my sweet gal.
Belton has also starred in Hair on Broadway. Tours: Wicked (Chicago), Evita, Hair.
