Axis Theatre Company Presents Premiere of GLUE TRAP Starting October 8

By:

Axis Company will present the World Premiere of GLUE TRAP, a new play written and performed by acclaimed Brazilian actress Sueli Rocha. Directed by Nena Inoue, performances of this limited engagement begin October 8th at Axis Theatre. Opening night is slated for October 10th.

New York City is a GLUE TRAP -- the more you move, the more stuck you get. A successful Brazilian actress immigrates to The Big Apple. While cleaning homes, she encounters a myriad of unexpected situations, which she responds to in her own inimitable, highly-theatrical style. Moving amongst badly-educated photographers, lousy babysitters and "perfect" men, she deciphers the strange and heartbreaking similarities between all people and the unusual connections one stranger can make to another. Funny, tender, full of loss and redemption, this glimpse into the extraordinary lives of the most ordinary people provides a sense of the confusion, laughter, love and death inherent in New York City life.

Originally from Brazil, Sueli Rocha has been living in New York since 1990. In Brazil, she has appeared in numerous productions including A Midnight Summer's Dream (directed by Yara Fa Silveira); four plays by Garcia Lorca (Bodas de Sangue and Dona Rosita, a Solteira, Yerma and Assim que passem cinco anos); Guarnieri's Ele nao Usam Black Tie (directed by Lala Schneider), Zumbi (directed by Oraci Gemba), Rastro Atras by Jorge Andrade and O Palacio dos Urubus by Ricardo Meirelles. In 1984, she was invited by Ademar Guerra (theater and TV director) to star in Colonia Cecilia by Renata Palotini. She also appeared on the television show Teleteatro, working with Ivone Hoffman, Luis Melo, Salma Buzar, Jonas Melo, Herson Capri and Araci Balabanian. In December 2008 she was given a Special Achievement Award at the 7th Annual Brazilian Awards in New York City.

Nena Inoue is an actress, director, producer and cultural "agitator." Her recent directorial work Henfil Já! (2008) was a sensation at the Curitiba Theatre Festival, the most prestigious theatre festival in Brazil, touring the country thereafter. Other directing works include Romeo and Juliet (2009) at Guaíra Theatre and Enquanto o Ônibus Não Vem, which won the prestigious Gralha Azul Award for Best Show 2007/08. She was the artistic director of Guaíra Theatre (2003/06), one of the most important theatres in Latin America. She is also a founding partner of several Brazilian theatre associations: Associação Livre de Teatro Teatroca (1985), Cia de Atores (1991), Espaço Cênico (2007) and ACT (2000/2009), which she currently manages. She has performed in over 30 productions, receiving the Gralha Azul Award (1993/94) and the Poty Lazarotto Award (1997) for Best Actress.

GLUE TRAP features lighting by David Zeffren, and sound by Steve Fontaine.

Through the careful utilization of various media, Axis Company has produced an eclectic series of original and published plays with highly advanced, state of the art technological components that enhance the internal meaning of the material. Past productions include Buchner's Woyzeck, Beckett's Play, Benjamin Baker's 1848 sensation A Glance at New York and the U.S. premiere of Sarah Kane's Crave, starring Deborah Harry, in addition to numerous original works. Their production of Edgar Oliver's critically acclaimed solo East 10th Street: Portrait with Empty House won the highly-coveted Fringe First Award from The Scotsman in August 2009 at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

GLUE TRAP runs October 8 - November 7, Thursday - Saturday at 8pm. (Note: there is no performance on Oct 31, but there is an added show on Weds, Oct 28 at 8pm). Axis Theatre is located at One Sheridan Square (just off 7th Avenue, accessible from the 1/9 train at Sheridan Square). Running time: 60 minutes. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for seniors/students, available at 212-352-3101 or www.AxisCompany.org.
