Axis Presents 10th Annual Cult Hit Serial HOSPITAL, Begins 6/11

Axis Company (1 Sheridan Square, just off 7th Avenue) invites you to the 10th installment of its annual downtown cult favorite Hospital serial. This episodic multimedia play examines the interior life of a man in a terminal coma. Entering this state in a different way every year, the audience travels with him as he roams the vast, dark interiors of his own brain. Although Hospital is a serial play, each evening can be viewed separately as a self-contained, short play. The serial runs June 11 - July 25 at Axis Theater.

In Hospital 2009, an astronaut is sitting listening to music in the NOMAD, an escape pod connected to the mothership EARHART.  When he accidentally releases the connector arm, his tiny ship hurtles uncontrollably into space. There is the possibility that he has sustained a life threatening brain injury during the accident, but his consciousness is travelling in the void. Waiting for rescue, the astronaut is visited by friends and memories. He thinks he might even be back on Earth, but then he finds himself travelling to destinations not on NASA's flight plan.  The final journey of the possibly comatose astronaut, who might be in his apartment after all, is played out against the backdrop of one human being's heart-breaking spirit.

The production stars Spencer Aste, Brian Barnhart, Regina Betancourt, David Crabb, Britt Genelin, Laurie Kilmartin, Lynn Mancinelli, Matt McGorry, Marc Palmieri, Margo Passalaqua, Brian Sloan, Jim Sterling and Blake DeLong with lighting design by David Zeffren & Amy Harper, set design by Kyle Chepulis, sound design by Steve Fontaine, costumes by Elisa Santiago, and cinematography by Ben Wolf.

Through the careful utilization of various media, Axis Company has produced an eclectic series of original and published plays with highly advanced, state of the art technological components that enhance the internal meaning of the material. Past productions include Edgar Oliver’s East 10th Street, Buchner's Woyzeck, Beckett's Play, Benjamin Baker's 1848 sensation A Glance at New York and the U.S. premiere of Sarah Kane’s Crave, starring Deborah Harry, in addition to numerous original works.
