Award Winning 'Doubt' At Florida Rep

"What do you do when you're unsure?" That is the question Doubt asks, and the answer unfolds as a dark and thrilling battle of wills set in a 1964 Catholic school. When Sister Aloysius suspects the progressive, young Father Flynn of wrongdoing, she must decide how best to confront him. Hers is a quest for truth at any cost, and illustrates the awesome power of doubt.

"From the moment I saw it in New York, I knew we had to produce it at Florida Rep, says Producing Artistic Director, Robert Cacioppo. Much like last season's Rabbit Hole, the 2007 Pulitzer Prize winning Best Play, which shocked and challenged audiences, Doubt will take them on a mesmerizing journey inside themselves."

"This play asks some very difficult questions, and raises some very controversial issues, but it doesn't answer those questions or take a stand on the issues," Cacioppo continued. "The playwright leaves that up to you – and that is his brilliance."

Doubt stars Lisa Morgan, recipient both the 2006 and 2007 South Florida Carbonell Award for Best Actress, as Sister Aloysius and Brendan Powers, an award-winning actor and director out of Buffalo, as Father Flynn. Morgan is a fixture on the east coast of Florida, and was seen last season at the Rep in Enchanted April, while Powers is making his Florida Rep debut.

Also featured are Rachel Burttram and Patricia Idlette. Currently serving as Director of Audience Development, Burttram was seen at the Rep in Proof, Amy's View opposite Carol Lawrence and most recently, Rabbit Hole, and Idlette who has worked extensively in film, television and with some of North America's most prestigious regional stages, including the Stratford Festival, is making her Florida Rep debut.

"It is one of the finest casts we've assembled," said Cacioppo. "And they're in good hands with the director and designers."

Director Maureen Heffernan, remembered for her work on Art, Master Class, All My Sons and Rabbit Hole, is leading an expert creative team including two of Florida Rep's finest, lighting designer, Todd O. Wren (Almost, Maine, The Rainmaker), scene designer, Ray Recht (Rabbit Hole, Rounding Third) with Florida Rep resident designers, Roberta Malcolm designing the costumes and Eric Watkins on sound.

Doubt, a Parable by John Patrick Shanley won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize in Drama, and swept the 2005 Tony Awards with 8 nominations and 4 wins – including Best Play. Playwright, John Patrick Shanley works in both film and theatre and is known for Joe Versus the Volcano, won an Oscar for Moonstruck and is currently filming Doubt starring Meryl Streep and Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

Cacioppo finished, "Sister Aloysius says that in order to expose wrongdoing, one steps away from God. It really is remarkable to watch her take that journey – and to see the consequences. Please don't miss this play."

Doubt plays at Florida Repertory Theatre from Jan. 11 – Feb. 3. Performances are Tues. – Sat. at 8pm, with 2pm matinees on Wed., Sun. and selected Saturdays with a Twilight Performance at 7pm on Sunday, Jan. 13.
