Allison Gregory's Bridget Cleary to Burn at CHAC

By:

Ladykillers' Productions, in association with Capitol Hill Arts Center, presents Allison Gregory's Burning Bridget Cleary. Directed by Sheila Daniels, the play runs March 2 - 18 in the Showroom at Capitol Hill Arts Center.

In a remote county of Ireland in 1895, the badly burned body of a young woman is discovered. Believed to be the last "witch burning" of Western Europe, the mysterious story of Bridget Cleary unfolds. Caught up in web of conflict between unpopular English rule and ancient, mystic beliefs of rural Ireland, Bridget's death becomes a story at once personal and nationalistic.

"I was fascinated with the complex political, religious, and socio-economic aspects of the story of Bridget Cleary," says playwright Allison Gregory, "as well as the mythic landscape where the events took place."

Kate Wisniewski stars as Bridget Cleary. The cast also includes Michael Patten, Charles R. Leggett, Amy Fleetwood, Jonah Von Spreecken, Darragh Kennan, Kate Czajkowski, Cristopher Berns, and Orla McGovern

The creative team for Burning Bridget Cleary includes Peter Dylan O'Connor (scenic design), Heather Moore (costume design), Robert Aguilar (lighting design), and Rob Wittmer (sound design/composer).

Allison Gregory's plays include Forcing Hyacinths (Julie Harris Playwriting Award; South Coast Repertory Theatre's California Playwrights Award); Fall Off Night; Cliffhouse, and Point Deception. She has received commissions from South Coast Repertory, ACT in Seattle, Seattle Children's Theatre, and A.S.K. Threatreprojects in L.A. Her plays for young audiences include Even Steven Goes to War ("Zoni" Best New Script Award; AATE and UPRP awards; Kennedy Center New Visions/New Voices series), Go Dog. Go!, adapted from the P.D. Eastman book and co-written with Steven Dietz, and a new musical adaptation of Peter and the Wolf, currently playing at SCT.
