Alliance for the Arts' Stonewall Forum Honors the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion

The Alliance for the Arts today announced a new feature in observance of the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall rebellion. The Stonewall Forum explores the cultural importance of Stonewall-what did it change, what does it mean and how is it remembered, in the US and abroad?

Stonewall marked the beginning of the modern gay rights movement, which would have a significant impact on the arts. Cultural groups are marking the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall rebellion with exhibitions, talks, concerts and public celebrations. A listing and map of activities at New York City cultural institutions can be found on NYC-ARTS.org - to view directly, click here.

Writers, artists, historians and activists have contributed brief statements to the Stonewall Forum, giving their opinions of the cultural importance of Stonewall. The forum, available on AllianceforArts.org, begins with statements from writer Edmund White; Patrick Moore, the founding director of the Estate Project for Artists with AIDS; and the painter and historian Jonathan Weinberg. Additions to the forum will continue throughout the summer, and the public is invited to contribute.

The Alliance for the Arts serves the entire cultural community through research and advocacy and serves the public through cultural guides and calendars. Through its NYC ARTS guides and calendars, the Alliance promotes New York cultural institutions. Through its research studies highlighting the importance of the arts to the economy and to education, the Alliance helps government and civic leaders understand the importance of cultural organizations to New York City. More information on the Alliance's work can be found at the new www.AllianceforArts.org.
