In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Award-winning creative team of Alan Menken and Glenn Slater revealed that they have written a pair of songs for Etan Cohen's new comedy HOLMES & WATSON, hitting theaters in 2018. The film, which centers on Arthur CONAN Doyle's iconic detectives, will star Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly.
"It begins in a musical theater, almost Rex Harrison kind of a way, and then it turns into a full-on, '70s pop/soft rock love extravaganza, with an operatic interlude in the middle," lyricist Glenn Slater tells the site. "It's a bizarre hodgepodge."
He continues, "One is essentially a love song between Watson and Holmes. It begins in a musical theater, almost Rex Harrison kind of a way, and then it turns into a full-on, '70s pop/soft rock love extravaganza, with an operatic interlude in the middle. It's a bizarre hodgepodge."
According to the site, the duo were asked to take on the project following the recent success of their crass, opening number to the animated film SAUSAGE PARTY. Jokes Menken, "They probably thought, 'Hey, these guys will do anything!'"
Menken, whose many hits include THE LITTLE MERMAID and LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, describes the second song as a "tongue-in-cheek busker number by a one-man band" that has "a Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins feel." He also reveals that he is currently scoring a new live show to be staged at Wynn Las Vegas.Photo Credit: Walter McBride / WM Photos
