As BWW reported back in June, Al Pacino, who recently appeared on Broadway in David Mamet's CHINA DOLL, was reportedly set to take on the role of iconic playwright Tennessee Williams in Dotson Rader's autobiographical new play, WHEN GOD LOOKED AWAY, co-starring Judith Light. The production was reportedly eyeing a winter 2016 or spring 2017 bow.
Today Showbiz411's Roger Friedman confirms that following "secret performances" held in Los Angeles last weekend for backers and friends of the production, producers are currently looking for a New York theater and hoping to reach the Great White Way before the end of the year in order to qualify for Tony Award consideration. Robert Allan Ackerman will helm the production with THE COLOR PURPLE's Eric Falkenstein serving as lead producer.
In addition to Tony winners Light and Pacino, "The Young and the Restless" soap veteran Miles Villaneuva stars as Rader's alter ego "Bobby," Williams' lover for the final years of his life. Villanueva turned to Instagram to share a photo of the cast (above), along with the caption: "For the past month and some change, I have been workshopping a new play, called GOD LOOKED AWAY (written by the talented and soulful, Dotson Rader), and co-starring opposite that man in front, the legendary, and truly angelic, Al Pacino, who stars as The Great American playwright, Tennessee Williams. My journey working opposite this man, with Al, has been nothing short of joyful, moving, beautiful, surprising, inspiring, and profound. And the journey, I think, is just starting..."
Pacino's other Broadway credits include GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, THE MERCHANT OF VENUS and SALOME. Theater vet Judith Light has most recently appeared on Broadway in THERESE RAQUIN. Her other credits include THE ASSEMBLED PARTIES, OTHER DESERT CITIES, LOMBARDI and HERZL.
