A Recital Held to Benefit the Opera Company of Middlebury 9/19
Soprano Beth Thompson and mezzo-soprano Fran Bull, along with pianist Cynthia Huard, will present a recital on September 19th at 3:00 p.m. in Middlebury's Town Hall Theater, to benefit the Opera Company of Middlebury.
The duo met singing together in OCM's production of A Dinner Engagement, which was staged in Fran Bull's studio at Gallery in the Field in Brandon. Bull began taking voice lessons with Thompson, and a fast friendship ensued. When Thompson and Huard presented a recital at Fran Bull's Gallery in 2008, during the post-concert reception Thompson coaxed Bull to try out some duets they'd been playing with in recent lessons. The assembled guests were delighted and the idea for a duo recital was born.
Thompson, one of OCM's founding artists, sang the role of Tosca in the company's 2005 production, and portrayed Lady Dunmow in A Dinner Engagement the following year. She was one of the Liebeslieder singers in OCM's A Little Night Music.
Bull (also a well-known visual artist) painted the magnificent backdrops of the company's first opera, Carmen. Later, she played Mrs. Kneebone, the wonderful maid, in OCM's A Dinner Engagement.
The pair's September program features a delectable array of duets from Vivaldi, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Delibes and Purcell, as well as solo arias and songs, including a few Broadway and American Songbook selections. A reception in the Jackson Gallery will follow.
The concert will be held on Sunday, September 19th at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 (reserved seating) and are on sale at the THT Box Office, 802.382.9222, and online at www.townhaltheater.org.
