'A Lot Of Night Music' Celebrating Sondheim

By:

The Waterfront Playhouse will open their 2007/08 season with a gala concert entitled "A Lot Of Night Music" featuring the music of the great theater composer/lyricist, Stephen Sondheim. The concert evening will be the first chance for the public to see the beautifully renovated Anne and Ross McKee Lobby at the Playhouse. This not-to-be-missed event will be held on Saturday and Sunday evenings, November 17 & 18 at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $75 in support of the Waterfront and will include a gala post-performance reception featuring a catered buffet by Great Events.

The evening has been conceived and directed by Danny Weathers, Artistic Director for the Key West Players/Waterfront Playhouse. Over thirty local and guest performers have been asked to perform a wide-ranging repertoire of some of Sondheim's greatest hits. Known for his elegantly witty lyrics and gorgeous melodies, Sondheim has composed some of the most legendary shows to appear on Broadway: "Company," "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum," "Follies," "A Little Night Music," "Sweeny Todd," "Into The Woods," as well as the lyrics for "West Side Story" and "Gypsy." Sondheim's works have also been compiled into popular revues, such as Side by Side by Sondheim and Putting It Together, which have played on Broadway and in London's West End.

Stephen Sondheim has won seven Tony Awards (more than any other composer), multiple Grammy Awards, an Academy Award for Dick Tracy (the award-winning Best Song makes an appearance in the concert) and has received a Pulitzer Prize for Sunday In The Park With George. Sondheim is also a recipient of a Kennedy Center Honor for Lifetime Achievement (1993). Frank Rich wrote in The New York Times that Sondheim is "the greatest and perhaps best-known artist in the American Musical Theatre."

Mr. Sondheim has also become part of the popular culture. Many of his song titles have been used as episode titles for the tv series Desperate Housewives. He also did the voice for a character on The Simpsons on an episode entitled "Yokel Chords." His songs have been recorded by an array of major vocalists: Barbra Streisand, Judy Collins, Frank Sinatra, Barbara Cook, Tony Bennett, Carly Simon, Bernadette Peters, as well as many others.

The concert promises to be a stellar evening and will feature many of Key West's best singers/performers, including Bruce Moore, David Black, Rich Simone, Randy Roberts, Joy Hawkins, John Wells, Dean Walters, Mark Watson, Randy Thompson, Marjorie Paul Shook, Laurie Breakwell, Mary Falconer, Robin Deck, Clinton Curtis, Mike Mulligan, Kristen Wilson, Gordon Ross, Nulita Loder, Mike McCabe, Vicki Roush, Carmen Rodriguez, Danny Weathers and The Three Divas – Melody Cooper, Melissa Tausche and Sandy Walters. The musical director and accompanist will be guest artist, Robert Strickland, from Atlanta, as well as Joe Dallas on bass and Skipper Kripitz on percussion.
