Steamy sunbeams filter in through high-rise windows, falling on glistening skin.  Too hot for clothes. Too hot to move and yet, the gasping exertions and determined movements continue.

“Holy stamina.”

“I never thought it could be like this.”

“Me neither.”

“It's beautiful. I’m plotzing. My ovaries are literally exploding.”

“This must be what it felt like....for him....”

“Except times one thousand.”

“Well, sure.  But he didn't have the triple threats.”

“No, just for reals threats.”

“Ah deega deega deega daga, boomkat boomkat boomkat boom!”

“And slide, stomp right clap clap!”

 “And…that’s 10.”

 “Thank you, 10.”

“Smoke break?”

“I quit. But I’ll go outside and hyperventilate with you.”

Hi, I’m Carmen.  Playwright and co-creator of Prison Dancer: The Musical.  The above dialogue happens between my co-creator, co-writer/composer Romeo Candido and our producer, Ana Serrano, as we watch our NYMF cast and Director/Choreographer in rehearsal. If you didn’t know, Prison Dancer is inspired by the real-life Youtube phenomenon of the Filipino Dancing Inmates (Google it). This is the 4th incarnation of our show, but the first time we’ve ever had full choreography and staging - even our 12 episode webseries (youtube.com/prisondancer) was limited in choroeography – but for NYMF, we’ve got 12 full-out dance numbers and 18 songs (6 songs not seen in the webseries) - performed by Broadway caliber Filipino triple threats. Feels like a Quantum Leap into a whole new dimension, and our arms are bruised from pinching each other to prove this is all real. Can a theatre show “go viral?” We hope so.
